Making Money Online: Advertise Your Website
Although you don't need to spend a lot of money on advertising, it's a good idea to get a few business cards run up. In fact you can make your own pretty easily using a number of free software packages that probably came with your computer; it helps a lot however if they look good! Apply the less is more principle to your cards and only give the information people need, ie your company name, logo, web address, contact details and maybe something useful like top tips or a mini calendar on the back - something that they'll want to keep in their wallet! Each time they use the card they'll think of your site.
Another tip is to give people a few extra cards and ask them to pass them on to friends or family. Although the internet is a very big place it does no harm to remind friends and family to spread the word about your site and you might be surprised by how willing people are to help. I've had friends coime back to me time and again looking for boxes of my business cards to leave in their workplaces and to distribute at events! All publicity is welcome :)
You can also advertise your site in other ways such as giving away pens/ pencils/ mousemats etc with your web address emblazoned on them. Many webmasters write short articles for distribution on article sharing sites such as EzineArticles.com. This can be a good way to get incoming links but be aware that some unscrupulous people will not link to you but be happy to steal your material. Thankfully many search engines seem to recognise this fact and still credit you for the article even if the links aren't active.
If your site is one that takes off and is doing well, write a press release and make sure you send it out to local papers too! Your story may be picked up by radio stations, local, regional special interes or even national papers and magazines - you may even get a few personal interviews out of it. Another bonus is that you'll get lots of backlinks to your website from other websites which publish your press release and this will help your rankings with search engines and ultimately make more people aware of the existence of your site!
You can also advertise your site on other sites that you own or by joining blog carnivals and adding your site to website and blog directories.
Finally, a word of warning; be very careful not to have your site listed on link farms of any description. If you do fall for a scam promising to submit your site to thoiusands of search engines and which will guarantee you tonnes of visitors every day then you will get heavily penalized by many of the top search engines. Keep away from anything that sounds too good to be true!
