Making Money Online: Advertisments on your Site
Deciding on Advertising
Many webmasters try out various advertising programmes before deciding which is the one they are happiest with and which makes them the best return. When deciding which advertisers to have on board you should test out a few different advertisers.
Probably the most common form of advertising seen on many websites now is the Google ad. In my experience with www.BreastfeedingMums.com this is the one that far outweighs all the others in my niche area of pregnancy and breastfeeding. It has constantly made me far more money than any of the other advertising programmes I have tried and believe me I have tried many!
Google ads are also extremely well targeted to each page on your website and if you don't like some of the adverts that are appearing it's very easy to block them. There are also a good variety of ad types and sizes to choose from, so you can play about until you find the ones that work for you. There are many online chatrooms and books relating which ads perform best and there are always many webmasters happy to offer suggestions if you so wish!
However, what works well for one webmaster may not work so well for another. Whereas lots of us are very happy with Google ads, many webmasters prefer to go with an affiliate programme such as Amazon or an affiliate agency such as TradeDoubler where they get a small commission for each product sold through their site.
Others approach advertisers directly and this can be profitable especially if you have a high number of unique visitors to your site and a lot of page views. It is also attractive to advertisers if your site is a local site and you are promoting products that they sell!
Instead of approaching individual advertisers some webmasters choose to use a middle man or an agency such as AdBrite or BlogAds. They will take a commission from the advertiser in much the same way as Google does and then place relevant ads on your site automatically.
Placement of Adverts
When you've decided which type of advertising you want to try it's important to get your ad placement right in order to get a good return on it. Bear in mind that ads which appear above the fold tend to perform much better than those which appear lower down the page.
People generally tend to read from left to right so ads appearing on the left do better than those on the right!
If you're using Google ads on your website Google provide a heat map showing the areas on a page that consistently perform best so make sure to check it out.
Don't put too many ads on the page. One at the beginning and one at the end of each page/ section of a page works well for me although sometimes people like to break up a longer article with an ad.
Play around with your ad sizes and formats and try out different colour schemes to to test which performs best on your own site.
If using Google ads place your ads in Channels so that you can track their performance on individual pages or ad types.
